Our March Usergroup Meeting was held on Saturday, the 12th, and it was a blast! Our guest speaker was Gary Sole, a 15 year veteran of 2D and 3D special effects animation. He’s done work on feature films such as Space Jam, Quest for Camelot, Iron Giant, Osmosis Jones, and Eight Crazy Nights. Gary has worked with Disney, Sony Pictures, Cartoon Network, and Reelfx. His demo reel gave us a look at how a lot of 2D effects animation is created.
After his talk, Gary pulled up a chair, sat back, relaxed, and related the tale of his career history from his English roots to his relocation to Dallas. He went over the chaos that can occur in creation of an animated film but also the enjoyment of working on new projects. Programs Gary frequently uses are Maya, Photoshop, Shake, 3d Studio Max, Flame, Nuke, and a few others. Gary’s suggestions to the audience were: We thank Gary Sole for participating and sharing some of his life’s work. You can contact Gary Sole by email at:

J. Schuh then demonstrated a series of plug-ins for After Effects called “Trapcode”. The Trapcode plug-ins are used by many special effect studios and these products are starting to be fairly commonly found in the industry. Once you see what the plug-ins can do, you’ll realize you see them almost every time you see a movie, commercial or music video. To quote J. Schuh “it’s pretty rockin cool!” He showed us a number of examples of work created via the plug-ins and had the audience enthralled! The meeting ran longer than normal because those in attendance wanted to see more, more, more. J finished the demonstration with a quick tutorial about the sound key plug-in, which maps imagery to specific sounds in an audio file. It was a great meeting. Thanks to everyone who attended. We hope to see more of you in April! |
