Game Addiction: Myth or Fact?- Our Responsibility as an Industry
Back in September when I attended the Game Developers Conference in Austin, I had the privilege as a Game Art and Design student to actually rub shoulders with real live actual people in the gaming industry. I have to say I enjoyed every moment and that my only regret was that the conference only lasted for three days.
While there, I opened my favorite Pandora’s Box and asked people about how they felt about creating a product that could effectively be involved with someone’s addiction to games. The stance I encountered in all cases for my impromptu poll was pretty well one-sided. In every case, the opinion was that gamers make the decision to play the games and their type of usage is not really the problem of the game maker. They compared it to the way that a person might consume alcohol. It’s not the fault of the alcohol industry that people are alcoholics certainly. Right?

Summary - WWWA&T Event
Yippee! I created a new acronym, and it's not "Walla Walla Washington." The day wrapped up nicely for the first annual Wild Wild West of Arts & Technology event. I thought the other speakers had great presentations, and personally connected most with the message in Tony & Rick's segment.
If you hadn't already heard, the highlight of the day was--surprise--J. Schuh, who proved once again that one can be entertaining AND educational in a single breath. J capitalized on a moment of awkwardness, and his stumbling Chevy Chase moment proved to be quite the real-time analogy for explaining the 12 precepts for animation.

What Software Packages Should I Know?
One of the most common questions I get asked is “What Software Packages should I know?". My usual response is Photoshop and Illustrator. Photoshop and Illustrator are like reading and writing in the graphic design and animation industry. From there it really depends on what aspect of the industry you want to work in.
